I thought the same thing before I started work on updating this film, but when you watch the footage in 16:9 your brain considers everything to be normal. It really doesn't stretch the image to a odd degree perceptively.
I watched over 30 minutes of footage today with some other folks who couldn't even tell that it was originally shot in 4:3 format. The black bars are more annoying than anything else to me, that's why I made it widescreen. (lol) (Also most everyone has a widescreen TV now a days, so it just didn't make sense to keep it 4:3 format if my goal was to bring the footage into the 21st century and future proof the film. On your advice though I will do a 4:3 format as well for those who don't like the widescreen version. Here's an example of what I mean: I did some test footage on Star Trek to see if it could be done to KR2000.
It's the DS9 episode 'Trials And Tribble-ations'. I cleaned up the footage, color and density of the telecine video. The first part of the video is the original clip.

A fun 1 hour diversion from the hardships of daily life, and a brief nostalgia trip to the 80's. Just take your brain out, ignore the toy model cars and bad stunt doubles and simply enjoy the show for what it is. I think Knight Rider is entertaining fluff. So a lot of people are really slamming Knight Rider for being a stupid goofball series and I think that is very unfair. Now that 80's kids have grown up, we're adults and we are looking back at this show through adult eyes. Yes, this is a kiddie show.īut after reading many of the comments here I feel that people are just being waaaaaay too hard on Knight Rider. It is true that this series does not feature the best acting and writing around, and it caters to children and the kind of crowd that love movies like "The Fast and the Furious" or "Armaggedon". Unfortunately this is not a show with much substance or intelligence. T, Punky Brewster, Run DMC and WHAM! Michael and KITT give me that warm feeling inside and they take me back to my childhood. Watching it makes me feel like a kid again, back when I had no worries in life beyond going to elementary school and doing homework. Knight Rider is a show that is basically only good for 80's nostalgia.
